Community
When the Junior League gets behind an idea, communities change for the better.
Junior League members are volunteers who are trained as leaders, organizers and spokespersons. The community is the ultimate benefactor, as members channel their knowledge into planning and implementing projects that confront critical issues and seek solutions to emerging community needs.
One of the Junior League’s greatest strengths is its ability to respond to a changing world. Projects are developed through the identification of community needs, followed by research and evaluation of the League’s potential role in meeting these needs.
Here are a few examples of recent project commitments to the Greater Wilkes-Barre area:
•Funded the Rooftop Playground at the Wilkes-Barre YMCA
• Created the Clothes Closet to provide clothing for underprivileged women entering the workforce
• Annually award scholarships to high school seniors who are committed to voluntarism
• Equipped the multi-purpose facilities at the Children’s Service Center
• Painted and decorated rooms at the Children’s Service Center, the Domestic Violence Center, and the Catherine McAuley House
• Assembled and donated comfort kits to the Victims Resource Center for distribution to sexual assault victims at hospitals.
• Distributed back packs stuffed with school supplies to area children in need.
• Raised over $24,000 to establish a permanent home for Ruth’s Place.
